Section of the pituitary stalk results in deranged transport of dopamine from the hypothalamus to the lactotrophs; it is also possible to speculate that pituitary or stalk tumours with abnormal blood supplies, or their pressure effects, may interfere with the circulatory pathways to the normal lactotrophs or to those within the tumour.
